5 Practical QR Code Use Cases You Haven't Thought Of

When most people think of QR codes, they think of adding friends on WeChat or scanning to pay. But QR codes can do so much more. After building this tool site, I have talked to users from different industries and realized many people only scratch the surface of what QR codes can do.

Here are 5 scenarios I have personally used or heard from users — each one worth trying.

Scenario 1: Digital menus instead of printed ones

A restaurant owner I know was tired of reprinting menus every time he changed dishes. Each reprint cost money, and he often found typos after printing. I suggested putting his menu online and generating a QR code for each table. Customers scan to see the digital menu, and updating dishes costs nothing. He said: "Five minutes to generate the code, saved six months of printing costs."

Scenario 2: WiFi password sharing

Every time a friend visits, the first question is "what is the WiFi password?" Then you search for the password on the router — a mixed-case mess that takes three tries to type correctly.

A QR code can store WiFi login info. Generate a "WiFi login QR code," print it on your fridge, and friends scan to connect instantly. The format is: WIFI:T:WPA;S:YourWiFiName;P:YourPassword;;

Scenario 3: Product manuals and warranty cards

I bought a coffee maker with a 30-page manual that took up drawer space and was impossible to find when needed. I scanned the manual to PDF, uploaded it to cloud storage, and generated a QR code sticker on the coffee maker. Next time I need to check the descaling procedure, I scan and read — no more drawer digging.

Scenario 4: Event check-in

Last week I attended a tech meetup where check-in was done by QR code. The organizer sent a unique QR code to each attendee via email. At the door, staff scanned the code and saw name, company, and position instantly. A 100-person event was checked in within minutes — compared to a paper sign-in sheet that would take at least 10 minutes.

Scenario 5: Product traceability

A friend who runs an organic fruit farm puts QR codes on every batch of fruit. Scanning shows the origin, harvest date, test reports, and even photos of the orchard. This QR code is his "trust certificate." Customers buy with confidence, and repeat purchases have increased noticeably.
