I have a friend who bought an air fryer from an international website last year. When it arrived, it was much larger than expected — it didn't fit on his kitchen counter. The product dimensions were listed as 16.5" x 13.8" x 12.2". He didn't convert to centimeters, so the numbers looked small. 16.5 inches is actually 42 centimeters — a lot bigger than he imagined.
Unit conversion is one of those things you don't think about until it matters. Here are the scenarios I encounter most often.
Scenario 1: International shopping — inches, pounds, ounces
International shopping is a unit conversion minefield. The US uses imperial, most of the world uses metric. Clothing sizes? Inches to cm, multiply by 2.54. Electronics? Same. Food weight? Pounds to kg, multiply by 0.4536.
My habit: when I see inches, I multiply by 2.5 in my head for a rough estimate. A 32-inch monitor is about 80cm wide. Not precise, but it prevents "I thought it would fit" surprises.
Scenario 2: Fitness tracking — kg and lb
Gyms have a frustrating problem: some machines show kg, others show lb. You push 50kg on one machine, then switch to another showing "110." Is that kg or lb? If it is lb, 110lb is about 50kg. But confusing the two can lead to injury — I almost pulled my shoulder once by using double my usual weight.
Key conversions: 1kg = 2.2046lb, 50kg ≈ 110lb, 100kg ≈ 220lb. Remember these three and you are set for the gym.
Scenario 3: Cooking — temperature, volume, weight
Following an international recipe, the oven temperature is in Fahrenheit. 350°F is about 177°C. But many people just set their oven to 350°C — and burn their cake to charcoal.
Temperature formula: °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9. Key points: 350°F≈175°C, 400°F≈200°C, 450°F≈230°C.
Scenario 4: Travel — miles, kilometers
Driving in the US or UK, speed limits are in MPH. 65 MPH is about 105 km/h. If you drive at 65 km/h, expect a lot of honking.
Quick estimate: 1 mile ≈ 1.6 km. See a 65 MPH sign? Multiply by 1.6 — that is your speed in km/h.
